As Germany’s GDNG transforms access to statutory health data, MEDDDICAL is helping pharma and MedTech researchers navigate new opportunities to use German claims datasets for real-world evidence, HEOR, and market access.

-- Cádiz, Spain, September 10, 2026 — MEDDDICAL has announced support for pharmaceutical and MedTech organizations seeking access to German health insurance claims data for real-world evidence (RWE), health economics and outcomes research (HEOR), epidemiology, market access, and healthcare research. Through its independent advisory model, MEDDDICAL helps research teams define their data requirements and assess potential sources before committing to a dataset.
The announcement comes as German statutory health insurance data continues to play an important role in large-scale healthcare research. Approximately 87-88% of Germany's population is covered by statutory health insurance, providing access to extensive longitudinal claims data across tens of millions of insured people. The scale of this data creates opportunities for RWE, HEOR, epidemiological, and other healthcare research.
For pharma and MedTech teams, however, greater data availability does not necessarily make selecting the right dataset straightforward. Germany offers multiple routes to claims and healthcare data, with substantial differences in population coverage, longitudinal depth, access timelines, analytical flexibility, governance, and suitability for particular research questions.
MEDDDICAL helps organizations evaluate these tradeoffs before committing to a data source. Its advisory approach covers access through FDZ Gesundheit as well as research institutes and commercial providers, helping teams determine whether the available population, variables, methodology, and access model align with the intended analysis.
FDZ Gesundheit can be particularly relevant when nationwide population coverage and representativeness are important, including for certain epidemiological, HEOR, and rare-disease research questions. Under the German Health Data Utilization Act (GDNG), however, access is subject to permitted purposes and eligibility requirements. Market research and product development are not among the permitted purposes for FDZ Gesundheit data access.
Commercial and research-institute routes can serve different requirements, particularly when project speed, repeated analyses, specific prescription information, or analytical flexibility are priorities. MEDDDICAL's assessment also distinguishes patient-level claims data from products such as prescription or pharmacy datasets, which may answer fundamentally different research questions.
"German health data offers enormous potential, but the largest or most familiar database is not automatically the right one," said a MEDDDICAL spokesperson. "Teams need to start with the research question and then determine which data source, coverage, access model, and methodology can credibly answer it."
